Suitcase edit
Malibu: Good Vibrations
Meet Emma Goodwin; Hotelier, Designer, Creative Director, Investor, Mother, Free Spirit and the ultimate Holiday St. Muse.
As co-founder of the acclaimed boutique hotel, The Surfrider in Malibu, and a career that started at the infamous Condé Nast, Emma can be credited for putting Malibu back on the map. Her Australian roots and endless globetrotting have shaped her unique perspectives, seamlessly blending a deep appreciation for art, culture, and design and apparently, good taste in music. Hit "play" to set the Malibu mood. {California Roadtrip Playlist}
I chat with Emma about the ultimate suitcase edit for the Malibu she knows; one that’s equal parts high and low... creative, eclectic, and fashion-forward. And, like Emma, one that doesn’t take itself too seriously!

“A PLACE WHERE TIME IS GOVERNED BY THE SUN.”
What does Malibu style mean to you?
To me, fashion is about bringing feelings to life. It’s an expression of how one feels in that moment, in that place. People have this idea of Malibu as this fabulous and fancy place, but the Malibu I know is creative, eclectic, light-hearted and fun. I am drawn to brands that capture this energy.
As a native Aussie, I naturally gravitate to Australian brands and the way that they just “get” beach lifestyle. Hope & May who truly capture the spirit of summer with their perfectly simple beach-to-bar pieces (hello Suki dress). Pippa Holt and how she works with female artisans to create bold-colored kaftans that can be dressed up or dressed down. Lucy Folk who comes out with subtle statement pieces and the most fun sunglasses season after season. Bondi Born’s summer color palettes (and, as a new mother, I must add a note about how lovely their styles are for this season of life). Of course, Matteau and their timeless silhouettes which have me reminiscent of my days spent summering on East Coast beaches. Not to forget Lesse’s perfect sunblock (trust me on this), Bodha’s “LA Woman” which quite literally bottles the scent of California and McTavish’s longboards designed for the Malibu wave. I could go on and on. I think it’s fair to say that Aussies really nail the perfect summer uniform.
What are your top 5 insider's tips you are willing to share?
THE SURFRIDER HOTEL: Of course, no trip to Malibu is complete without a cocktail on the guest-only Surfrider roofdeck, with the most spectacular ombré skies and view of the surfers catching the perfect wave at First Point.
AGAVE HOUSE: For a different perspective, Agave House is an otherworldly home in the Malibu Mountains that transports you to Mexico or Ibiza. It’s my go-to for trips with friends or family when I need more than a hotel room.
SURF CANYON: Explore Malibu Surf Canyon; home to creatives, artists, makers, and Malibu boutiques. “By locals, for locals”. You can also get a day pass to hang in their club house and do farming or ceramics classes.
HIKE AMONG THE WILDFLOWERS: at Point Dume Headland. An easy stroll with spectacular views.
ZUMA BEACH: Roll out your (Baina) towel and settle in for a day on the beach made famous by Baywatch. I like to hit the south end, tucked up under Point Dume Headland where it's a bit quieter.
